David has worked as a Clinical psychologist  in the NHS for 35 years, including 24 years at Consultant level.

He had responsibility for the development and management of NHS psychology services for older people,, brain injury services, and health psychology, and has particular clinical expertise in psychological problems associated with 'old age'.  He also has experience of working with adults of all ages on a wide range of issues.


He formally retired from main NHS career in 2014. Positive testimonials given on retirement are included later.


Special Clinical interests include:


  • Stresses caused by major life changes

  • The interaction between psychological / mental health and physical health conditions including coping with chronic pain

  • Memory problems including those  associated with ageing and  those associated with dementia syndromes.


The range of approaches that in some ways have grown out of Cognitive behaviour therapy, including:


  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Compassion based approaches

  • Mindfulness based approaches

  • Group, Family and Couples approaches


David has had longstanding and close links with the Liverpool  University Clinical Psychology training course in terms of teaching, and research and is very experienced supervising other staff, especially trainee psychologists.

Ron Sutherland, BSc (Hons), MClinPsychol, CPsychol, AFBPsS


Ron Sutherland has worked in the NHS for 28 years as a fully qualified Clinical Psychologist with the latter 16 years as Consultant Clinical Psychologist before retiring from the NHS in 2014. He now works exclusively in a private capacity on a part-time basis.


He has extensive experience of working with people with mental health problems, including older adults. He has seen adults referred for a range of emotional difficulties and across different levels of severity. After qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist from The University of Liverpool, Ron has worked in NHS mental health services in Merseyside and Manchester.


His psychological practice is rooted in evidence based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy. His training and experience enables him to integrate other models within an individual treatment approach. (E.g. Family Therapy, Mindfulness and Compassion Focused Therapy, EMDR). He has particular interest and expertise in trauma and depression. He has worked with the psychological impact of a range of traumatic events such as road traffic accidents and assaults. He has substantial experience of work with complex trauma including those with origins in childhood.


David and Ron are  Chartered Clinical Psychologists registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Associate Fellows of The British Psychological Society (BPS).  


Both have extensive experience of providing clinical supervision to clinical psychologists in training and other mental health professionals. As Consultant Clinical Psychologists within the NHS they have taken lead roles for research governance and both have considerable experience of interdisciplinary line management. They are committed to lifelong learning and Continued Professional Development (CPD) and regularly attend conferences and workshops and keep up to date with the latest developments in psychological theory and practice . Both continue to provide and receive clinical supervision
